Cat behavior can be complex and confusing even for the best of “experts”. The truth is no one really knows why they do the things they do, in the way they do them. They are cats.
Often misunderstood and neurotic, thought by some to be aloof and arrogant. I am not an expert in that I a degree or have formally studied cat behavior. I have been a lover and owner, for lack of a better word, of cats for many years and have come to understand some things about my purr-y friends, some of which I will share with you today.
The Time Loop
Cats are able to manipulate the time space continuum and often get stuck in what I can only understand as a “Time Loop“. While in this loop they will repeat sequences of movements, gestures, and actions again and again until someone or some thing snaps them out of it. This loop may circle around a couple of time, in which case there is no need to worry. In some cases and with some cats, the loop may circle around several times and not stop. If you think your cat is in a time loop, do what you can to snap him out of it, lest he be trapped forever, or at least until he gets on your last nerve.
The Food Is Poop
Cats sometimes get confused and do everything in their power to bury their food. Smelling and burying over and over. This may fall under the category of Time Loop if left unchecked.
What Poop?
In my experience long haired cats don’t realize it’s their job to bury their poop, so often don’t even try. Sometimes a halfhearted attempt is done just a sign to his beloved subject that it’s time to clean out his box.
Lets Act Up
Cats are able to sense emotions and are very good at reading facial expressions. It is because of this that they will dart in front of you when your late for work, get into mischief when your tackling a new project, or lay behind you when you are hurrying to get dinner ready. This is just their way of contributing and becoming part of the experience.
The Axe Murderer
Cats are wonderful companions and if you find yourself alone in the house, it is not uncommon for them to come to you to keep you company. This is usually when they enjoy looking behind you, into a darkened room ,or down the hall, with a look of start and surprise. Is it an axe murderer or just kitty having some fun? Obviously they have a sense of humor.
The Summons
Believing they are of noble descent it is not uncommon for some cats to go into another room and begin yowling for no apparent reason. This will usually happen during episodes of “Lost” or “CSI“, or when your attention is needed somewhere else. This goes back to the days of yore, they are simply reminding you that they are the center of the universe and you shouldn’t forget.
So
Cats are very imaginative and can play with virtually anything that interests them. If you buy them a toy it is not uncommon to get a look of “So.”, just before they turn and walk away. The higher priced the toy, the less interested they will be. Best you save your money and get a large paper grocery bag instead, he’ll just love it.
These are just a few of the behaviors I have observed with my cats. You may have observed these yourself, or perhaps others all together with your own cats.
Take heart, it’s normal, that’s why we love them, and you are not alone.
